I had the opportunity to host Arline Chandler – Smith as my special guest author on the August 2009 Dreaminar.  Arline shared her perspective on Workamping with us and also took questions from the attendees.

We recorded this event and it is available for your review on the Workamper Dreamers website at:

http://dreamers.workamper.com .

Take a few moments and get to know Arline better and see why I suggest her books as must reads to you.

Arline Chandler – Smith has Workamped at numerous locations from Maine to Oregon over the years and has written a number of wonderful articles about people she has met and experiences she has had that have been published in Workamper News magazine.  As a WorkamperPlus subscriber you can access a number of the articles in our online archive of back issues going back to 2006.  To learn more about subscribing if you are not currently a subscriber check out:

The second book that Arline pinned a few years after Road Work I is Road Work II.  Here is what we have to share with you about Road Work II in the Workamper News Store:

Subtitled “The RVer’s Ultimate Income Resource Guide,” this book gives faces and personalities to real-life Workampers and the employers who hire them. Through their shared experiences and tips for finding productive and profitable jobs on the road, this guide is a springboard for an RVer’s imagination and ingenuity in seeking income earning opportunities compatible with individual interests. Paperback. 498 pages.

Here’s what Chuck Woodbury, editor of NewRVer.com has to say: “Oh my goodness. . . is this a piece of work! What an awesome book, just two pages shy of 500 pages. If an RVer looking for work on the road doesn’t find the advice or job they’re looking for here, well, then they’re probably unemployable. But seriously, this book goes well beyond the usual “how-to” advice (although it has plenty) to actually profile Workampers and the employers who hire them. In addition to entertaining glimpses into the working RVer’s lifestyle and viewpoints from employers, this book offers information on how to do your Workamping homework, how many hours of work should you expect to do in exchange for a campsite, how to get jobs outside campgrounds and how to operate an on-the-road business. Author Arline Chandler doesn’t miss a thing. Virtually every type of job is profiled from positions in national parks to those at Disney, golf courses, lodges, on cruise ships, in wildlife programs and countless other places. In addition, Chandler provides extensive information about volunteer positions, where Workampers can truly help enrich other peoples’ lives. This book is worth every penny of its price and more. You will love it.”

This book is a must read!

If you are a serious Workamper Dreamer there are a few titles that must be on your must read list. Let’s take a look at these over the coming days.

There are two authors that Workamper News has affiliated itself for a number of years.  They have written books as well as articles that we publish on a regular basis in Workamper News magazine.  Workamper News magazine is our bi-monthly publication that is available by subscription.  See https://store.workamper.com/subscribe for more information.

Arline Chandler – Smith has two titles that are must reads for the serious Workamper Dreamer.  The second author is Jaimie Hall – Bruzenak who also have two titles which must be on your list.

Let me share today a bit about Arline Chandler – Smith.  Arline has been an RVer for a number of years and even though not actually Workamping in the many locations over the years has interviewed hundreds who have and are living the lifestyle.  She has two books available that I highly recommend to you:  Road Work I and Road Work II.

Today let me share with you what we say about Arline’s Road Work I book in our Workamper News Store:

Road Work I – Subtitled “The Ultimate RVing Adventure,” this book is a must-read for anyone considering combining the RV lifestyle with part-time or full-time working (Workamping). A Workamper News staff writer, Chandler has drawn from her Workamper Journal articles, along with her RV travels and in-depth research to provide profiles of working campers who have found job opportunities in varied settings “from RV parks to theme parks to RV delivery.” The book also provides feedback from employers, and an extensive reference and resource section filled with information about working on the road. Paperback. 274 pages.

You will find a variety of different training and informational resources in the Workamper News Store.  This may not be the case at your local bookstore as they are more limited in scope on the topic of Workamping.

You will find training CD’s such as Workamping 101 & 102 that provide you the recorded version of a training series presented as live webinars this past January and February.  All of the resources are available on the CD that was presented during the class.

There are also live opportunities for online live webinar training courses over a variety of subjects.  This fall the RV Professor from Waco, TX is presenting a number of one evening short courses on a RV technical topics that everyone who is going to own and operate an RV should take.

These webinars are taught online using our GoToMeeting program that allows the Professor to stay in Waco, TX and teach folks via their computers all across the country.  This past week he had a student in Hawaii and Alaska online.  They are a great resource and something I highly encourage you to check out.

Some folks prefer the live version of any course so you have interaction with the instructor.  This is possible with the webinar provide live Q&A.  Others want to be able to study the course on their time schedule.  That is the main difference in recorded verses live courses.  It is a personal choice.

If you haven’t checked out the Workamper News Store I encourage you to go there today.  If you are working on developing your Workamping Dream you must begin your educational journey and you will find no better resource anywhere than the one we provide at Workamper News.

Educational resources are sometimes difficult to come by that are targeted to the subject you wish to study.  That is one of the reasons Workamper News is continuing to develop the training resources found in our store at https://store.workamper.com/

There you will find a number of books that are targeted towards RVing and more specifically the Workamping lifestyle.  You will also find a Training section where we have a number of training CD’s and Technical courses.

I encourage you to check out our store and take a look at some of titles available.  We will be reviewing a few of the titles over the coming days to provide you with a finer tuned direction.

In yesterdays post I commented that reading and learning isn’t really an optional path, but the only path to a successful Workamper lifestyle.  Some took opposition to that statement.  Yes, I must concede that you can watch training videos, and yes webinars like we produce for you at Workamper News.  These are a part of the pie.  You will still need that added thrust that additional input from book sources will provide you.

Speaking of reading books, I will encourage you to go back to our text we have been using for this blog – “The Success Principles” by Jack Canfield and read Principle 20 – Commit to contant and never-ending improvement.

So no, I won’t back off encouraging you to read as much as you can find about the RVing lifestyle and ultimately the Workamping lifestyle.  I will close today with a quote from Chuck Gallozzi – “We have an innate desire to endlessly learn, grow, and develop.  We want to become more than what we already are.  Once we yield to this inclination for continuous and never-ending improvement, we lead a life of endless accomplishments and satisfaction.”  One of those accomplishments and satisfactions for you will hopefully be – the Workamping lifestyle!

Knowledge will take you a long way in the Workamper lifestyle and will save you money as well as provide you with a more positive experience.  It really isn’t an optional path, but the only path to successful Workamping.

So how do you get started?  Begin by checking out your own home library and see if you have anything already on your shelf about RVing and by chance Workamping.  Your next stop might be the library to check on books on RVing.  You probably won’t find much on Workamping.

Once you have begun to develop your RV knowledge, your next stop is the Workamper News Store.  There you will find targeted specific books written by Workampers about the Workamping lifestyle.

Tomorrow we will take a look at some of the titles in the Workamper News store that are must reads.

That is the question I ask myself each time we begin work on a new issue of Workamper News magazine.  I evaluate each proposal for the development of a new tool that will eventually be available for WorkamperPlus subscribers by putting myself in the shoes of the Workamper who will be using it.  Or, the employer who will be using the tools.

I am telling you this so you will have a better understanding of how seriously we take our mission to Help Great People Find Great Jobs in Great Places while living the RV lifestyle – thus Workamping.  Each new tool that we develop will be a waste if it does not elevate Workamping to a new level.

It is for this reason that we continue to develop programs such as this blog and the Workamper Dreamers website for example.   If you haven’t visited http://dreamers.workamper.com and listened to the recorded interviews with first year Workampers make that one of your very next things to do.  If you listened to them a long time back, please take a moment to review them.

I have been asked a few times of late to explain the relationship of Workamper Dreamers to Workamper News.  So here goes…

Workamper News, Inc. was started in 1987 by Greg & Debbie Robus to fill a need to supply RVers who wanted to work in various campgrounds and actually any working opportunity while living the RV lifestyle.   It started as a one page newsletter and has now grown to a bi-monthly magazine along with now two very busy websites.

Kathy Jo (my wife) and I, purchased Workamper News from the Robus’ in 2005 and are working to take the company to new heights to provide the 21st century Workamper with the educational and operational tools you will  need to successfully experience the lifestyle.

Workamper News provides by subscription, a bi-monthly magazine (online and paper version), www.workamper.com and also http://dreamers.workamper.com .  Both of these sites have many parts including our Awesome Applicants Resumé system, Workamper University and much more.

I am the editor and Dream Engineer at Workamper News and I hope this short explanation will help all of our readers understand the relationship of all of the pieces.
